Premier Dunderdale visits Beaumont-Hamel

It has been 95 years since the Newfoundland Regiment went over the top at Beaumont-Hamel. Today they were remembered during a wreath-laying ceremony at the war memorial in downtown St. John’s.

There was a parade by members of the Royal Newfoundland Regiment, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, and the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary. Then came the wreath-laying and the playing of the last post.

One veteran who fought in the Korean War hopes those who paid the ultimate sacrifice will not be forgotten.

Natural Resources Minister Shawn Skinner laid a wreath on behalf of the province this morning at the National War Memorial in St. John’s.

Intergovernmental Affairs Minister Dave Denine will represent the provincial government at a ceremony commemorating the Battle of Beaumont-Hamel at the National War Memorial in Ottawa this morning at 10 local time.

Premier Kathy Dunderdale is in France today marking the anniversary of the Battle of the Somme. She spoke at a Beaumont-Hamel ceremony. Dunderdale joined Veterans Affairs Minister Steven Blaney, Royal Canadian Legion members, veterans, and selected students. It’s the first trip to Beaumont-Hamel for the Premier. She also attended four other wreath laying ceremonies.
